Description
African Teakand
Ironwood
desk, with lead wood curved legs, and large corner credenza. Desk base is
African ironwood
, the desk and credenza tops are all
African Teak
wood from
Rhodesia
(now
Zimbabwe
).
Teak
Wood - the
teak
wood tops came from the Rhodesia's original railroad infrastructure (i.e. the RR ties). The
teak
was so hard and beautiful, they literally replaced them with concrete ties. The
teak
ties were then sent off to
South Africa
to be used to manufacture exotic furniture.
Full disclosure - I am selling this set for a friend, who had another friend custom design them, then had a South African company custom manufacture this one-of-a-kind office furniture set 25 years ago. There is a gap in the table top shown in one of the photos, probably due to the dry heat of Idaho. Desk top is 1" thick, while the trim with all the elephants, warthogs, buffalos, and rhinos is 2" thick.
Ornate animals carved into trim of Desk trim:
There are 5 buffalos, 5 elephants, 5 warthogs, and 6 rhinos carved into the edge of the table (for a total of 21 animals).
Ornate animals carved into trim of Credenza trim:
There are 4 each of buffalos, elephants, and rhinos carved into the trim of the left credenza, and as many of same carved into the right credenza, comprising a total of 2 dozen animals, in addition to other flora and fauna carved into the trim.
The large curved legs are made of leadwood, and appear similar to the brown wood of the ironwood base down below the bark of the base supporting the leadwood table legs. Ditto for the outer trim on desk near and around the pull out drawer in front.
I could lift the top off the base, it might weigh 100 - 200 lb. I could barely lift the left side of credenza off the floor. I could not budge the right side of credenza. An estimate of weight and dimensions may be found on two drawings found with other images, so a freight estimate is possible.
