This is a sweet Miocene aged fossil sand dollar.
A sand dollar is a highly flattened form of Sea
urchin of the order Clypeasteroida.
They live in shallow marine environments just
below the low tide line,
buried in the sand or mud.
It is still embedded in the limestone matrix in
which it was found,
but has been prepared to remove the rock from
on top of it and fully expose it.
The sand dollar itself is about 6.0 cm's in
diameter.
This piece is 11.3 by 8.4 by 3.8 cm's in size.
