    Description

    This is a traditional
    clay figural group
of some villagers enjoying a meal at the local
    Taco Stand
    .....
I purchased this piece directly from the artist...
(see 5th photo, Tomasa - the New York times recently did an article on the artists of Michoacan and Tomas was featured in that article...)
She is a very imaginative artist and a lovely lady as well... I am quite fond of her....
It measures 11 inches tall by 7 1/2 inches wide and 6 inches deep.
I recently got in a huge shipment from Mexico.
Included in this shipment are a number of these wonderful clay pieces filled with Peasants, Skulls, Flames and Devils.  They are made in the
    remote
    village of Ocumicho
.  I will be listing many more pieces by
Tomasa Gonzala Sanchez and her daughter
Adelaida Pascual in the days to come...
    The pieces are crafted from
    locally collected clays
    then
fired in a pit kiln before being meticulously painted
. Each one is a unique one of a kind work of art.
"In the rural Mexican state of Michoacán, devils, mermaids, saints, sun gods, and drunks can all be found mixing it up and having a great time. Each of these characters, and many more, inhabit the strange universe depicted in sculptures produced in the tiny town of Ocumicho.
These bizarre pottery tableaux feature hybrid scenes from everyday life, religious allegories, and native folklore..... Resembling Hieronymus Bosch’s nightmarish landscapes from the 1500s, but with a Catholic-folk art twist, these ceramic fantasies are found nowhere else."
