Description

Here is a very detailed fossil starfish Brittle Star Petraster, from the Kataoua Formation near Blekus Morocco. In the Anti-Atlas part of the Atlas Mountains.  From the Ordovician, about 450 million years ago, when most of today's Morocco was a seabed.
The detail you see is natural, nothing has been artificially enhanced. The longest length is about 53 mm. The tip of one arm is missing, the rest of the animal is in excellent condition.  The piece has a maximum length of about 12.3 cm. (4.8"), and it weighs 10.0 oz. When these pieces are excavated, they usually break and are reattached later. I see one attached crack on the back side, but I do not believe it went into the starfish itself.
A very nice and interesting addition to a fossil collection.
