BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman today said the upcoming national elections will be much tougher than any of the earlier ones held in Bangladesh.
“It may be so that our main opponent has grown weaker, but even so, this election will be far tougher than any of the previous ones in Bangladesh,” Tarique said during a virtual discussion at a workshop held in Khulna and Mymensingh today.
“A very challenging election is approaching because, 20 years ago, people could vote without fear. If you look at the 2001 election, you’ll see that people’s mindset has changed since then. People are now much more aware, whether it’s due to social media or any other reason,” he added.
Tarique urged party members to remain cautious, saying, “Colleagues, if anyone thinks that something in your area is not affecting you and no one will find out about it, that’s a misconception. People find out.”
“If anyone has made mistakes in the last three to four months, or if any leaders or activists around you have made mistakes, it is your responsibility as a leader to guide them onto the right path, make them aware, and keep them vigilant,” he added.
Speaking about BNP’s position, he said, “We haven’t come to power yet. We don’t know if we will come into power. We can only achieve that if we earn the support of the people.”
